I see Pankratiasts who neither gouge eyes nor bite.

While it's true that our culture is corrupt, and this corruption definitely extends to and manifests in MMA, there are individual fighters today who represent some of the best elements of the ancient Greek Olympic sport of pankration. Moreover, it's one thing to say, "I don't like that sport" (an optional preference) or "I'm not good at that sport"; it's another issue to imply that an entire sport as such represents objective immorality (i.e., an attack on the idea that "it takes virtue to be good at something").

"The feats of the ancient pankratiasts became legendary in the annals of Greek athletics. Stories abound of past champions who were considered invincible beings. Arrhichion, Dioxippus, Polydamas of Skotoussa and Theagenes are among the most highly-recognized names."

  • 1/2 I agree with virtually all of this. My comment in Croppers channel was about the popularity of MMA, as opposed to it's value per se. I agree with you that there is much to be gained from it. The only issue I would have with what you say here, however, is that even though it is educational to find out which fighting style is best (or to synthesize and create new styles), why should that be entertaining? ...

  • @grantsinmypants2

It does HAVE to be entertaining. It's optional, but as I said, I found it be entertaining because I enjoying a good fight :-)

    *does = does NOT

  • i agree that in principle there is nothing wrong with mixed martial arts fighting. the mma though is a terrible execution of the concept. the aesthetics of it are all wrong. usually thugish looking lummoxes rolling around in a cage like animals with a bunch of retards cheering them on. cheesy colors, bright lights, and stupid announcers. loud death metal playing. it exudes something completely different than what you talk about here. it resembles a prison brawl more than any greek sport.

Don't you get the same sense of humanity when you go to a mall on Black Friday?

  • Being an MMA fighter has one drawback, though....

    You can't turn Super Saiyan.

  • @ppw00

    True, sadly.

  • @qtutoringhelps ... both relatively recent cultural phenomena.

  • 2/2 ...If you live in a place where your style will beat the people you expect to have conflict with, who cares?

In any case, I had actually put my thoughts down on this topic this morning. I was planning on refining them and sending them to you. I will do that in a day or two.

  • @SuperFinGuy

    I'll check it out, thanks.

... are not had by men who have been cut in half by a train at the waist.

  • @Tallaias

Well, our culture is late Rome, and the losers are nearly fed to the lions.
