Terry McGinnis is not Bruce Wayne's son, Wayne's only son is Damian Wayne first mentioned in comics in 1987. McGinnjs is from a different Earth and while he does have Wayne's DNA through gene therapy he would be more of a watered down clone than an offspring. He has biological parents

If you want just a one off The Dark Knight Returns.
If you want something to start with that's in cannon I'd say any of Paul Dini's books. those ar epretty self contained and easy to get into. And HEart of hush is one of my favorites. Knightfall as well is really good.
Ether with teh Essentail stuff or with the first volume of JMS's run.
