Despite threats, Ayaan Hirsi Ali keeps going

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) In front of a packed house on January 23rd, 2009, and with her bodyguards not far away, Ayaan Hirsi Ali shared her ideas on Islam, thoughts that led to her need for bodyguards.

Though her ideas are controversial, she continues to speak out because she believe strongly in free speech, and that the ideas of freedom are under attack by elements of Islam.

Born a Muslim in Somalia, she fled when her family tried to force her into a marriage. She ended up in The Netherlands, became a citizen and a member of Parliament. But it came to an abrupt end when the director of a film she produced, Theo van Gogh, was murdered by a Muslim fanatic.

She took refuge in the US several years ago and is now working at the A merican Enterprise Institute.

Though she earns most of her living through public speaking, she faces continuous death threats. And speeches like the one at Calvin College are rare.

"I was terrified that people would see my face too often," she said in a one-on-one interview with 24 Hour News 8. Asked about the renewed sense of security Americans seem to be feeling seven years after 9/11, she said, "The problem is not over," and urged citizens to "take it to a new level."

No one in the audience at Calvin College appeared outraged over her comments.
