Its clearly audible, and every record I've seen quotes it as "things"

I think he forgot what he was going to say and just filled it in with that.
in another speech he said "we will achieve the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and return him safely to the earth"
I think he wanted to say "and return him safely to the earth" but he was caught up in the applause and forgot what he was going to say. so he said," and do the other thing"

It's been almost 46 years since Kennedy gave this speech - more than 10 years before I was born. In that time, it seems that our leaders have all but forgotten how important it is to answer the important challenges that face us. It's a shame we have gone so long without his kind of leadership.
