The golden orb spider does not get its name from any colours on the spider but from the colour of its silk and as the sun would strike the web its was clear to see all the golden threads of silk which make up the web. These spiders do not build a new web every night and will use one web for many years. So there is always maintenance to be done and we could see this female eating some of the old silk. They will do this to recycle the silk. It was fascinating to see her then start to clean herself, pulling her legs between her promarginal teeth. This was when I noticed the size of her fangs and was relieved to learn that these orb spiders are completely harmless to humans.
As the morning moved on the sunlight moved off the spiders web and we to moved on to see what else we could find that is sharing our campsite with us.
Beautiful close-up, wonderful clip.
