Let's Play Silent Hill 2 - Pt 31 - Analysis : The Meaning of the Monsters

Continuing the "behind the scenes" look at Silent Hill 2, it's time to actually discuss the symbolism of the various monsters. It's interesting to look at how they represent various facets of James' mental issues. This is something Silent Hill tends to do rather well most of the time, and SH2 is probably one of the best examples. Anyway, actual gameplay will resume in the next video. You're almost there Roahm,but you got some things wrong. It's true that each monster is specific but the same one never appears twice. Some may seem similar but are different because of what they represent. The Nurses are a good example. As for the Abstract Daddy, it is completely specific to Angela. The reason James sees it is because his nightmare overlaps her's. This also explains why he's able to see Eddie's and Angela's Otherworlds. If you can see YOUR nightmare, you can see other ones too.

I'm just going by my own research on the Abstract Daddy. I still think there is some slight representation there that overlaps with James.

Here's hoping for a Halloween '11 LP of Silent Hill 3, my personal favorite of the whole series. Finished watching through the first SH just now and watched 2 previously already, good memories. Been years since I played through them myself so had mostly forgotten what happens. Great work as always Roahm, thanks for quality entertainment~

The second one represents the guilty that james feeled when he killed eddy to do not get killed, i think so, because maybe it the most close traveler that he filled as a friend.

One thing to note about Marias third death; she gets skewered by PH. In the Historical society (I believe lol) there was a picture that noted that prisoners having the choice between being skewered or being suffocated. Maybe Maria chose to be skewered rather than suffer being suffocated again, eg reliving more of Marys memories? --Laurie2733 being too lazy to sign into her own account. ^_^

@RoahmMythril If abstract daddy needs a psychological link to james to reaccur, beyond it being just the return of something scarey, I suppose could be representitive of his sexual frustration, specfically;- he maybe once had a guilty thought(s) of having sex with his wife while she was ill (maybe even with an agressive undertone as im sure Mary wouldnt have felt particularly amourous) hense the smaller weaker figure.

one question, why was James able to steal the Pyramid Head's weapon of choice the great knife? It's his weapon of choice so why would he give it up so easily?
