RC MiG 29, modified from plans sold by Dave Powers at www.rcpowers.com . I used 4mm Coroplast instead of 6mm Dupron and reduced the size of the elevator to reduce over-control. I intentionally built it "heavy", using lots of Shoe Goo and even metal control rods. I then added about 3 ounces of lead weight...all to accommodate the 25-30 mph Easterly winds found at Seroe Colorado on the S.E. Aruba coast. I also used the KF-2 airfoil (Kline Fogleman) as demonstrated by Dave Powers. The wing LE and airfoil were formed by a 5/32" balsa strip (for the L.E.) and 1/4" balsa sheet (for the airfoil) sanded to shape.

  • Sparrowlt,

The problem with using a jet design for a slope glider is that you need lots of speed. The only way to get it is to have a combination of very high weight and very strong wind movining almost straight up. This particular location in Aruba (Seroe Colorado) has the right wind most of the time. I built my MiG29 out of Coroplast which is very heavy compared to the foam that most people make them out of when they are powered. The KF airfoil helped add to the necessary weight.

  • @myYachoo I can't tell if the KF airfoil actually helped at all because I have nothing to compare it to.

    Good luck!

  • Do you live on the island?

  • No. I visit once a year in the January-March timeframe.

  • So how does a KF airfoil works on slope soaring? im thinking in building a delta wing slope soarer Mirage like plane using RCpowers eurofighter as base but dont know if it would work or if i would be wasting time...

  • i live in Aruba :)

  • Dirk! What's with that hat? Looks like fun! Nice video!

  • It also helps if the plane is in the frame :P You could have cut the clip a lot shorter, too. Flying was nice.

  • Oh nice!

  • I think you could learn something from Howard Hughes with regards to filming planes... when there are no clouds or other points of reference then it just looks like a photo of a plane against a blue background. When you got a cloud, water or land in the background, you could see that that thing was moving and that the plane was really moving.
