Madame Sarkozy
It's the big test for any musician. The secret of the long-running BBC television show is its gladiatorial format, which pits half a dozen diverse acts against each other, with Jools Holland as the avuncular master of ceremonies. Bands around the world are drawn to it. Where else do they get to play live on TV and go head to head with their rivals?
I'm not sure Carla Bruni had ever considered Metallica as rivals before she went to record the show on Tuesday. But, as you can see when the show goes out again tomorrow night on BBC2, the breathy chansons of France's angular First Lady more than held their own against the authors of Whiplash and Kill 'Em All. But more than that, her whole approach to the show revealed an artlessness that is rarely seen in the music business.
Where she might have hidden away until called to the set, Bruni was present throughout. There were no presidential guards obviously to be seen; no bullet-proof Citroën purring at the exit. "There are some seriously talented bastards here tonight," shouted the warm-up man. "If you want to wave your willies, shout 'Yes!'?" We all shouted yes. So did Carla. A techie wandered past her with half a plastic cup of warm lager. She stole a sip.
The Carla/Metallica clash was clearly not lost on the producers, who had them stationed next to each other. But when the Californians started up their great grinding power chords, Mme Sarkozy clapped excitedly and did a sort of Italian grocery heiress's version of headbanging. She was the same for each of the other acts: rapt attention, dancing, smiles, applause.
Nearly 1 million viewers witnessed the UK television debut of singer Carla Bruni, the wife of French president Nicolas Sarkozy, last night, Tuesday, September 16.
Bruni, who wowed the UK when she accompanied Sarkozy on his state visit of Britain in March, sang songs from her new album live on the launch of the new series of BBC2's Later Live ... with Jools Holland.
The show pulled in 800,000 viewers and a 4% share between 10pm and 10.30pm, according to unofficial overnight figures. An extended version of the programme will be shown on BBC2 on Friday at 11.35pm.
The music show came last in its slot, with BBC1's News the winner at 10pm with 4.3 million viewers and a 23% share over 25 minutes.
ITV1's live coverage of the Uefa Champions League match between Marseille and Liverpool gained 4.6 million viewers and a 21% share between 7.45pm and 9.45pm, according to unofficial overnight figures.
Full coverage, including pre- and post-match analysis, drew 4.1 million viewers and a 19% share between 7.30pm and 10pm.
ITV4's coverage of the Chelsea v Bordeaux clash picked up 751,000 viewers and a multichannel share of 3.8% between 7.45pm and 9.30pm, with the full programme including analysis gaining 641,000 and 3.3%.
The second episode of Channel 4's controversial The Sex Education Show picked up 2.2 million viewers and a 10% share in the 8pm hour, with a further 221,000 watching on Channel 4 +1 an hour later.
The Secret Millionaire brought 3.6 million viewers and a 17% share to Channel 4 in the 9pm hour, with 261,000 more tuning in on Channel 4 +1, while BBC1's Mutual Friends picked up 3.3 million and 15% in the same slot.
Channel Five's CSI: Miami drew 2.3 million viewers and an 11% share in the 9pm hour, while BBC2's Horizon documentary attracted 1.3 million and 6% between 9pm and 9.50pm.
LONDON (AP) — Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has shared the world stage with Britain's queen, the pope and the Dalai Lama.
But in London on Tuesday night, France's first lady appeared on a different kind of stage, this time with rock royalty — the Kings of Leon and Metallica.
Introduced simply as Carla Bruni, she sang live on the British Broadcasting Corp. television program "Later Live ... With Jools Holland" and was interviewed by the pianist.
