The Government has scored a victory at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) sessions in Geneva. Sri Lankas resolution received a majority of 17 votes..
29 countries voted in favour of the Resolution. 12 voted against it. Six countries abstained from voting. Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe moved the Resolution on behalf of the Sri Lankan Government. Accordingly, the Council had to drop the draft resolution moved by countries led by Switzerland calling for an investigation into the human rights situation in the island.
A majority of Islamic, Non Aligned and African countries voted in favour of Sri Lanka. India, Pakistan, Russia, China, Malaysia, Angola, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cuba, Myanmar, Egypt, Ghana, Indonesia, Jordan, Madagascar, Nicaragua, the Philippines, Uruguay, Zambia, Qatar, South Africa, Senegal, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and Nigeria voted in favour of Sri Lanka. Argentina, Japan, Gabon, Korea, Ukraine and Mauritius abstained from voting. The countries which opposed Sri Lankas Resolution were Bosnia, Canada, Chile, Germany, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Slovania, Switzerland, France and Britain.
Accordingly, Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said it is a massive strength for the President the support extended by a majority of the countries.
