Written by Tito Arevalo, "Hinahanap Kita" is one of the most popular Kundiman song during the 1950's. Interpreted by Cely Bautista. Audio from a vintage 78 RPM phonograph recording originally published and manufactured by the now defunct MICO Records.

CELY BAUTISTA

Maria Cecilia Pimentel Bautista, better known as Cely Bautista, was a popular Filipino singer from 1950s to 1960s who recorded songs under Mico Records, Villar Records and Mango Records.

Bautista began her singing career at the early age of 7. She was discovered by Pete Ancheta, and was made to sing as part of the duo The Wonder Kids. It wasn't until 1954, when she was 15 that she was introduced by her eventual husband Eddie San Jose on the radio as Cely Bautista, performing regularly on the programs Star Time and Midday Jamboree on DZFM radio; and was later paired with Ruben Tagalog in his program Harana. From 1957 to 1875, she was a contract singer of Villar Records, recording a total of 12 long playing albums, immortalizing such hits as Dahil Sa Iyo, Maalaala Mo Kaya, and Ang Tangi Kong Pag-ibig.

TITO AREVALO

Eustacio de Leon Ilagan in real life, but known as Tito Arevalo, he is a composer, lyricist, musical director and actor. He is respected in the history of Philippine cinema for his contributions and versatility. He has a son who has also made a name in show business, an award-winning actor, scriptwriter and director, Robert Arevalo.

Born on the 29th of March 1911, he is one of the children of zarzuela writer Hermogenes Ilagan and stage actress Casiana de Leon, and a brother of National Artist Gerardo de Leon.

When he was growing up, he was allowed to take formal lessons in music. Aside from that, he would act in his father's zarzuelas and through this, he was able to develop his ability and art. They saw how good he was in playing the piano so he would accompany silent movies and perform in night clubs in Manila.

He studied Law at the University of Manila, but still he chose to continue being active in music. He became successful as he began receiving awards for composing songs that touched the hearts of Filipinos, especially htose who often go to watch movies.

He started professionally working in the cinema through acting in his first movie, Dasalang Pilak in 1934. After many decades, he was able to prove that he has depth in different aspects in movies. This was because he also started being a musical director and he received an award for being a supporting actor.

Such commitment to his craft, not surprisingly, brought him honor and acclamation through various forms of recognition, including the Maria Clara Award for the musical scores of Huwag Mo Akong Limutin (1960), El Filibusterismo (1962), Igorota (1968) and Lilet (1971).

His body of work has certainly enriched Philippine Cinema with the musical scores of the FAMAS Best Picture, Sawa sa Lumang Simboryo (1952), the original Dyesebel (1953), the Philippine-Hongkong co-production, Sanda Wong (1955); the Pancho Magalona-Tita Duran musical Mr and Mrs (1956); and the movie adaptation of the other Rizal masterpiece, Noli Me Tangere (1961), directed by his brother Gerry de Leon.

Although he did not become very successful, the fact remained that he was the one who composed several songs that have been part of the lives of many Filipino families. Among them were Lahat ng Gabi, Bawat Araw, Bakit Kaya, Hinahanap Kita, Minamahal, Sinasamba, Ikaw ang Mahal Ko, Irog, Ako ang Mahalin, Iniibig Kita, Margarita, Alinlangan, Habang Buhay, Araw-Araw, Katakatakang Tunay, Jeepney Serenade, Ulirang Puso and Magandang Bituin. Those songs were used in movies that were mostly directed by his own brother, Gerry de Leon. Not only were they used and reused as themes of the movies, many of whom were directed by National Artist Gerry de Leon. Aside from that, top singers were the ones asked to sing those songs.

His last assignment was directing the music of Sinong Pipigil sa Pagpatak ng Ulan (1979)a film by his son Robert Arevalo.

In 1985, the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino honored Tito Arevalo with the Natatanging Gawad Urian, or the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Philippine Cinema.

  • To PhilClassic, Thank you for uploading this. I am so sorry to hear about your dear grandmother losing your sweet grandfather in the WW II. She must have loved him dearly because she never married after the tragedy. My Lolo (Papang was also a guerilla in WWII. He survived the tortures. I appreciate you for all of your work in uploading these rare music. I am a kundiman singer myself and sung kundiman songs in various places in Manila, Isabela and Cagayan. Mabuhay ang Kundiman at ang Pilipinas!

  • @71ilocano : You're welcome Sir. A very blurred photograph of my Lolo wearing the US Armed Force uniform (now its lost, I saw it when I was in Highschool when my Lola was still alive) is all that was left by my Lolo to my Lola before he died (killed by the Japs). His remains were never found. Thanks for the compliments and for keeping the Kundiman tradition alive. If you have Facebook please add me as a friend.

  • Philclassic, so sorry that they didn't find your Lolo's remains. That is an awful tragedy. Your Lola must have grieved so much that was why she loved the song, "Hinahanap Kita". I also added you as my friend on FB, just in case you close your channel on Youtube, at least maybe I still could listen to Filipiniana Music Archive through your FB or other means. Mabuhay!

  • Thanks! I am sorry you lost your Lolo's photo. My Papang (Lolo) had many stories during the WW II. One time the Japanese captured him and several other guerillas. The Japanese forced these men to drink lots of water then see sawed on them. My Papang prayed that somehow he won't have to endure this. When it was his turn to be tortured, they run out of water! He said, "I will fetch water for you!" and away he went and never came back. By the way, I am a Filipina with American husband.

  • Cely is my favorite Pilipino singer. Her expressive voice sends me a shiver.More power to you Cely.Thank you for your contribution to our music industry.
