Bus falls in ravine, 2 dead, 10 injured
A Ceres Liner passenger bus fell into a ravine at about 8 last night in Sitio Dukog-dukog, Barangay Rizal, San Carlos City, leaving two dead, while 10 were reported injured, among them a policeman, Chief Inspector Victorino Romanillos said.
Romanillos, officer-in-charge of the San Carlos City Police, yesterday identified one of the two fatalities as Teodoro Aburido, bus driver, while the identity of the other fatality, has not been established yet.
As of Wednesday midnight, Romanillos, who led the rescue operations, said they are still searching for about five to six missing passengers, based on the accounts of those who survived the accident.
Initial reports show that that the bus had 21 passengers, 18 of whom were issued tickets, while the three others were the driver, a bus inspector and a conductor, Senior Supt. Allan Guisihan, Negros Occidental police director, said.
Romanillos said four of the 10 passengers who were treated in two hospitals in San Carlos City, were later transferred to the different hospitals in Bacolod City, for further treatment of their injuries.
He identified the injured policeman as PO3 Edsel Villanueva, a member of the Calatrava Police Station.
Initial police investigations by the San Carlos police showed that the Ceres Liner passenger bus with body number 5229 and driven by Aburido, which left Bacolod City for San Carlos City via Don Salvador Benedicto town at past 5 p.m., fell into a ravine, estimated to be 60 to 70 meters deep, almost two hours after.
Passengers interviewed by DYEZ Aksyon Radyo said the lights of the bus they were riding on went out four times, but the driver kept going until it fell into the ravine.
Among the passengers was Charlie Pablo who said he was bringing his wife, Gina, to the hospital. Gina and his sister-in-law, Emerina Dumangas, were among those injured.
Pablo said that while he was he was being rescued, he heard that three of the passengers had died.
Other injured passengers as reported by Aksyon Radyo were Rodito Lumanog, Richard Lasconia, Jesamine Lucas, Rey Anoble and Teodoro Ulgasan.
Romanillos said members of various rescue groups in San Carlos City, and members of the city police force, despite the darkness and the danger of being hurt, were still scouring the area for possible survivors last night.*GPB
