Graffiti Artists Bubblez+Phade work on piece with Casa do Alentejo board member Lurdes Cruz, Toronto, Ontario Canada.
Casa do Alentejo is a Community Centre which has been open to all Canadians for twenty-four years. It is located at 1130 Dupont Street, Toronto, in the heart of the Portuguese Community. This organization provides unique opportunities for all Canadians to gain an appreciation of the different cultural values and norms which contribute to the social Canadian landscape. All members and those who are connected to the centre are proud not only of its accomplishments during the last twenty-four years, but also for the significant role it plays in the life of the Portuguese Community in Toronto.
The organization, Casa do Alentejo Community Centre, has contributed immensely to all Canadians of diverse age groups. Students have always been a welcome group. The Centre provides a recreation room for student organizations, such as YUPA and UTPA of both universities in Toronto. This room is primarily used for Halloween and Christmas parties. Students attend the Centre on regular basis not only for pleasure but for conference meetings as well.
The Centre celebrates annually a Cultural Week which occurs throughout the second week of October. This week enables artists to present their best work, therefore, enriching the knowledge to all communities in Ontario. As a result of this successful event, Casa do Alentejo was honoured by prestigious awards from all three governmental levels.
The Centre has established a vast number of . These groups were formed by enthusiastic volunteers who are honoured to represent Casa do Alentejo on cultural and recreational activities and events. An advanced group is the Male Singing Choir who have attended numerous events with great success. As a result, other groups were formed: Female Singing Choir, the Adult Folk Dance Group, Youth Folk Dance Group, the Table Tennis Youth and Adult teams, the Rhythmic Gymnastic and Tae Kwon Do classes. All these groups are composed of 120 members.
Our future endeavour is to create music classes for the youth, an Art Gallery so we can have Arts & Crafts classes, and a Fitness Centre which could be open during the day for the seniors.
