Artilect means Artificial Mind.
So imagine, they could restructure them self, watch the results and if the results are good then incorporate it to them and all at the speed of light
That artificial species would be almost godlike
Imagine a home robot upgrading year after year just because the demand is there and the economy momentum, how do you stop that? You can't
So those Artilects could drain all the oxygen, for protecting circuits or something, and not care to the consequence toward us.

No seriously. I doubt very highly a machine would ever detonate an EMP intentionally.
See an Artilect would not need to have something written into it's code like that, a reason to go to war with man. It could simply perceive man as a threat and that's that. It is intelligent on it's own.
Think SkyNet. That is actually quite an accurate portrayal of a Human-Machine conflict situation, believe it or not.

I acknowledge that it isn't very realistic, but then again, the story was more of an afterthought. At least it's better than a bunch of random clips of stuff blowing up.
I've always been a fan of the Terminator series.
