Samuel Ramey sings "Chanson romanesque", the first song from Maurice Ravel's song cycle "Don Quichotte à Dulcinée" (1932-33) - "Don Quixote to Dulcinea". Warren Jones, piano. 1987. Sorry for the poor audio quality. :(

(Were you to tell me that the earth
with all its turning offended you,
I would dispatch [Sancho] Panza there;
you would see it fixed and silent.

Were you to tell me that you grew annoyed
of a sky too flowery with stars,
destroying the divine order,
I would sweep the night away with one blow.

Were you to tell me that space
thus emptied did not please you,
I, knight of God, lance in hand,
would stud stars into the wind as it passes.

But were you to say that my blood
belongs to me more than to you, my Lady,
I would turn pale at the reproach,
and I would die, blessing you.

Oh, Dulcinea.)

  • Is this published in this key? I think this is a whole step lower than normally published.

  • This isn't a "Role". This is a three-song cycle by Ravel, not the full opera by Massenet. But, I've seen Ramey in Faust years ago, and for voice, he has to be one of my favorites. What color!

  • All the people who think Sam Ramey can't act should see him in this role. He's brilliant!
