The contemplative nature of this geet reminds me of Yoshida Kenko, a 14th-century Zen aesthete of Japan who extolled the half moon over the full moon, and one partly obscured by mist over the brightly shining one. He valued the worn out silk over the well-preserved one, and an incomplete series of books over a complete one. His reasons were similar to those in this poem, sung with feeling by AB. Kenko's Tsurezuregusa( "Ruminations in Idleness") has shaped many Japanese aesthetes.Thanks,SJ.

@chamogaa You are so well read! I had to struggle with the meaning of this song. To my practical mind, I did not understand why the poet is asking his aspirations should remain unfulfilled. The last unsung stanza shed some light, which I think says, when we continue to seek then there is liveliness, When we get everything we want, the happiness looses the meaning. I might have totally misunderstood it. Speaking for myself, I don't mind if my one aspiration of winning supper lotto comes true !

@SJisBack Boiled down to its essentials, this philosophy is like that old Engklish cliche that says traveling hopefully is more exciting than arriving at one's destination. It's just a way of giving perspective, so striving well for the desired things becomes valued as much as attaining them, and more than waiting for a windfall! Clearly, most of us will not shun a windfall if it occurs. And I hope you get yours someday,SJ, as a reward for the joy and serenity you spread around on YT.

@crazyoldsongs Thank you. There is a Japanese artist, Yuriko Lochan( wife of Rajeev Lochan, who heads the National Museum of Art in New Delhi) who has created beautifully subtle pieces of art with the use of "halves". They can be seen on the internet by clicking on her name.
