@cavalrytm putting your arm through the loop is hardly what I would call nonsense. Shooting off hand is different, but when in the prone position, putting your arm through the loop on a sling give you basically 3 stabilizing points of contact with the firearm; the pistol grip, the fore-end, and the third being your shoulder that is secured to the sling. Give it a shot, the stability is amazing! the closest thing to rest shooting you can get... without actually shooting from a rest.
When I'm shooting my M1 or any other rifle off-hand (standing), I just wrap my arm around the sling so it's tight (adjusting the overall legth one time so it stays that every time I go to use it), and just shoot it like that. None of that "put your arm though the loop and adjust this and that" nonsense...
Because British officers were sent to the U.S. to train on weapons and tactics when they were pretty much losing. Then we sent them back to Britain to train thier own.
Not sure the man in this film is a Brit or just sounds like one. I love my Match Grade
heheh 'this film is restricted'...

@bonjo1616
lol. That's an American actor. That's how many actors spoke on-screen back then.

@TheOz91 Yes -- really a "Mid-Atlantic" accent like many movie stars cultivated at the time.

He's speaking in a Boston accent, or New England accent.
