Maybe that gives hint to his "humanity" as explored in that episode where they pondered if he was aware, or mere machinery. The fact that he didn't just tear it implies he chose to protect the integrity of the finger trap, for whatever reason. His calculations, however, should have determined the solution. Analyse the object. Understand it's mechanics. Undo it.
But really it was just a joke. You rarely see that kind of subtle character-building in entertainment anymore.
