It is illegal to fish off of Kilbear Pt. We used to Fish Mowat Island (monster lakers) just north of Kilbear Pt. in the Big Sound...but the area is protected (just like the waters around Kilbear. You can fish the Big Sound and near the hatchery. You need to look at the regs because specific areas are closed to fishing (e.g., Sandy Island). Plus don't forget the slot requirement!

@madlar101 We are well aware of the regs and slot requirements. I have the off-limits areas programmed into my GPS (updated every year). I agree that fishing south and south east of the end of the point is off-limits, but you are mistaken that fishing in the entire area is prohibited, unless something changed in the past 6 months. We fish the east side of Kilbear, as well as along the west side of Mowat Island, and I speak with fisheries officers every year while actively fishing those areas.

thanks alot man, were do u get wire line? and do you need baitcasting reels?

@nimsboy You can probably find it easily online, but locally I found it at Divers Nook right in Parry Sound. Get 20# or 30# line and then attach a swivel to the end and a 4' flourocarbon leader. You can't cast using wire line, you just have to let it out because it can tangle very easily. I use 8' trolling rods from Walmart or Canadian Tire. You can get a rod/reel trolling combo for about $100. Or you could just put the wire line on a baitcasting rod/reel combo.

@nimsboy I've ignored this account for quite a while and just saw your question. All the fish were caught within about a mile radius of Killbear. Just off Killbear Point, the lake trout are active about 50' down. It's easier to get to them than you might think. We troll with wire line which goes down about 10' per 100' of line out. Use Mepps Cyclops lures in silver/blue, silver/red and silver/yellow. They bite best early in the am or around dusk. Let me know if you need more info.
