I really do believe that this is the most beautiful piece of music i have ever heard. I adore the little section between 2.30 and 2.50....it brings to mind the sun appearing from behind a cloud. I know virtually nothing of classical music or indeed piano playing techniques, but i recognise true beauty when i hear it.

To give a 2 hr performance, all from memory - to hear those church bells in the background during the soft passages, not breaking concentration - even w/out vid to audio sync his sparse touch tells you he is CHANNELING the music from his soul & pushing it through his hands = VERY FEW living or dead pianists could ever accomplish this! I listen to this almost every week as a meditation. Have found close, yet no better or as utterly compelling reading. Vlad was pure genius, a gift to the world!

Noitrocan: I only referred to the "memory" from this point of view. Yes....with practice since childhood, many musical pieces are not that hard to play from memory. However, 2 hrs of music from various composers, every other night, even with church bells ringing AND to play each piece so evocatively......is really amazing. Many still need music scores to be able to play for 2+ hours.

I also do agree that Horowitz was a genius but just wanted to say that playing from memory isn't difficult at all :P

Funny how one can spend so much time listening to the latest fashionable pianists and, most valuably, digging up greats who never quite got their 15 minutes of fame, but who now have been relased at last on CD. All fanatstic, but then at the end of a long day put on Horowitz and he siply has it. Fabulous.

One of my favourite piano pieces, wish I could play it. It's enough to be able to listen to it & be transported somewhere else...
