"out of status" post 9/11 climate pt. 1 of 2

In post 9/11 America's civil liberties have been curtailed in the name of national security. The Muslim community, collateral damage in the war on terror, has been alienated by selective enforcement of new and existing immigration policy, and families have been separated. In this short documentary, we profiled three families whose lives changed, and who continue to suffer the impact of a selective enforcement of immigration laws. Carma, an American citizen, saw her husband Akram arrested from home and deported to Egypt. Two days after 9/11, Salem, a US citizen, was detained for 40 days and held in solitary confinement for allegedly stealing a rental car. Hakim, an Algerian, had permanent residency papers pending with INS (now the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or BICE). After 9/11, he was placed in deportation proceedings, and has a wife and a one-year old son based in Brooklyn. In a country that treasures freedom and democracy, these trying times have brought anguish to those who come here in search of a homeland. America may not be the nation of their birth, but the homeland of their choosing. this video will help foster an understanding between the immigrants of yesterday and today.
