Why aren't the women and children taken into account? 5000 is about the size of a Roman legion. If you were a political contender, you needed to show you could mobilize an army... and feed it!
just a thought.
In John's version, the people clearly saw Jesus as a political leader they could follow, and challenge the roman occupation.
