Tarawa Dancers

Dancers from the Island of Tarawa, in the island country of Kiribati (pronounced Kiri-bas). Like many dances of pacific islands, this dance is telling a story. Music is produced locally in modern style, but the dance is very old. Male dancers wear grass woven overskirts to exaggerate the slapping sound to the leg. Dance and costume of Tarawa is different than other islands dances. Our Astronomical Tours group traveled to Tarawa and Marakei island to watch the Total Solar Eclipse of 2009.

The whole island was devastated in WW2.Nothing stand.I believed the island was repopulated from nearby island

Not exactly. The battle of Tarawa is a famous WWII battle, where the casualties of US and Japanese soldiers were vast. However, the island population was not engaged and survived the devastating event.

Not the whole island of Tarawa was devastated. That's not true. The battle of Tarawa occurred only on a separate islet called Betio at the tip of South Tarawa. The whole islet of Betio was truly devastated. Nothing was left. However, it was not the whole island of Tarawa.
