  • The reason why I paid only $12 for this is probably more because I was the only bidder (not Ebay)... It was the first time that I bought a record from that seller and this was the very first record I had in my hands when I opened the parcel. At first, I was quite angry because this record looks at best V++ (very scuffy) and i thought that it was highly overgraded like the others. When I cleaned and played it, I was amazed. It played at least E!!!

  • Yep - both sides are now unplayable as a whole. Make that about 16 grooves on the chip - about 1/2 an inch into the playing surface.

No idea when or how it happened, but it's absolutely ruined. *&@^$#^@$#*^#@*^$@*$#$!@#$!#@$!%#$!^$@#!$@^@&%^#^!@%!@

Think you could lend a hand in locating another copy sometime down the road, Atticus? :(

  • Therefore, believe me: This is NOT a clean copy... LOL... Only my "Struttin With Some Barbecue" with Louis is like this record. Looks like s**t but plays marvelously.

Too bad for you (and your record). I'll tell you if I see another copy...

  • Another "milepost" in recorded jazz....

  • Take note of your bidding luck, Atticus - it likely won't happen again with a record of this caliber.

I recently (Sat.) got lucky like that (ebay) in winning 2 Georgie Auld Orch. 78's on the original Guild labels for $6.95 (only bidder) - what the seller forgot to mention was that those four 1945 cuts featured an orchestra littered with a YOUNG J.J. Johnson, Dexter Gordon, Trummy Young, Al Killian, Art Blakey and Dizzy Gillespie!

Take heed, Atticus - we've got some blessings to count. :)

  • Man, I'll tell you: You just cannot beat those old Columbia D's and OKeh's from the late 1920's-early 1930's. Best 78rpm pressing material (whatever the heck that magic stuff is) I've ever experienced, hands down.

My lone Bix OKeh (At The Jazz Band Ball/Jazz Me Blues w/Chauncey Morehouse) also looks like crap, yet plays a hell of a lot better than it has a right to.

And thanks for putting out a feeler - "Basin Street Blues" from this session is a masterpiece I'll gladly go broke for.

  • Clean copy, but it's a bit clearer now why you were able to get your copy for $12, while I had to give out $40 for mine:

Yours is a later blue label pressing, while mine is the original black/gold "Viva-tonal" 1st pressing that has the notation "Under direction of Bennie Goodman" under the Chasers name.

And, lend a prayer for me - I just got my copy out to confirm the details and found a 'nice' rim chip about 12 grooves into the playing surface - it's ruined.

    (con't)
