Can't you select everything then de-select the part you don't want black and white? :)

it takes you one min to tell us how to duplicate something and another 2 to go through modes of making from colour to grayscale, we only need one way!
great tut really easy to do though ;D !

on my gimp there isn't the layers thing that you have on the left of your screen HELP

oooor to save more time... duplicate the layer, click one of he layers and grayscale it :)

duplicate layer colors,componets,channel mixer, monochrome..then u have simple grayscale...
