There are many steps a pitcher needs to follow when throwing over to first base. This video will lay out the steps necessary and guide you in the right direction. This does take years of practice so do not become frustrated and keep working at your fundamentals. For more videos like this go to http://www.isportsgallery.net/

  • This pitcher has his back foot far away from first base on the rubber when he's in his stretch. I always have my foot as close to first base as I can while still being on the rubber. This really helps with my pickoff move because I can now get a [little bit] better angle when I pick to first. Also since I pitch like this all the time it doesn't effect my pitching to batters.

  • @AlexsTechChannel you bring up a good point. Having your foot positioned like you do also makes it easier for you to pick up the outside corner on a righty or to jam lefties.

  • just one clarification. If you throw to first you do not need to "pause".

  • @rcmcknight that is correct. You can technically be standing on the mound and throw over without starting your motion. I wanted to make this video into one that showed how to pick off a player when you are going through your motion in the stretch.

  • ...i am an umpire...

  • @ISGvids107 what i mean is that the pitcher can bring his hands together as if he is going to come set and then in a motion that would be the same as not coming set prior to the pitch he can throw to first (or any base for that matter). If an umpire calls a balk in this situation for "failing to come set" this would be the wrong call. it is not a balk. The only reason I bring it up is that it is another way of "legally" deceiving the runner...the runner is expecting the pitcher to come set...
