Taken from the 12" single (Canadian pressing, Columbia 12CXP 05157)

It was 26 years ago today, and Bob Geldof (of Boomtown Rats fame) released this classic Christmas anthem to raise money famine relief in Ethiopia. Ultravox's Midge Ure handled the production, and Band Aid featured such artists as Bananarama, Culture Club, Duran Duran, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Heaven 17, Phil Collins, Paul Young, Paul McCartney, the Boomtown Rats, Status Quo, Spandau Ballet, the Style Council, Sting, Ultravox, U2, Wham!, etc. This song was VERY popular - it topped the charts and set off a round of charity singles (such as "We Are the World" by USA for Africa and "Tears Are Not Enough" by Northern Lights) that continued for several months. It was re-recorded two times - once in 1989 and once in 2004. I also have the 7" single - if you want to see it, go to this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzzZFHcynbY

Merry Christmas to all!

Warner Chappell put a copyright claim but did not block it. Strange considering that Sony didn't do it cause they own the copyrights! Well, at least the label says that the song is published by Chappell Music Co.

  • Eventually I will re-upload my posting of this from last year, which scrolls the names of every performer, but not tonight, it still needs to be WaxBadgered before I upload it.

  • @WaxBadger What does WaxBadgering mean? Removing the cartoon parts?

  • @OldMusicOnVinyl1 Actually, the Christmas music I'm uploading was previously on the jconifer7 channel last year when WaxBadger didn't yet exist. The seasonal photos in the videos are still intact, but I changed the title screens and added the snowflake graphic as a five second end cap.

  • @WaxBadger Oh, okay.

  • Fantastic tune!!! sounds amazing!

  • @KcBargainDeals Agreed!

  • @2:30 Phil Collins start a little drumsolo...

  • just wanna boogie

  • There aren't many versions of this out on Youtube. Thank you for posting this out there as I am formulating my playlists for my channel for Christmas. (I've actually got a Comedy playlist, a Traditional Rock, and Traditional, which this falls under the Traditional, though it has sort of a rock feel to it, it has a pop element.) I prefer the longer version over the radio play version as you have some of the artists adding a personal touch, even if they were in the chorus part.

  • @SlimeTron5000 Please don't have remorse or anything for Northern Lights. I actually like that tune OVER the USA for Africa tune! It's a nice tune!

  • @VoyageOne1 You're quite right. I'm a columnist with MIX magazine. I actually interviewed Trevor Horn years ago and brought this very question up. Naturally, given that he entered production of this extended version with the forethought that there would be a lengthy narrative part (the phone-in/personal message part 2/3 way through) he backed off the reverb wetness (it was actually a completely different Lexicon program) for the whole thing. Both on vocals and main instrument sub busses.

  • Great, thanks - I was looking for that very long.

    THX THX THX

  • Yes !!! Thx !!!

  • The reverb doesn't sound as long on this mix

  • I would agree with people who say it's better than "We Are the World". Let's not listen to those jerks who try to stop us from saying "Merry Christmas"!

  • @SlimeTron5000 Aurora Borealis anyone? lol... :D I have "Tears Are Not Enough" on a 12" single, I'm sure you'll "love" that one too.
