My favorite Mbilia song is Nakei Nairobi with Rochereau. Did you know that Moi, president of kenya, banned all foreign music from public radio but when Rochereau composed this little number modified to praise him, the ban was promptly lifted:-) I now can see why Tabu ley ended up being a politician!

Living sometime in Lomé in 1985 i listened a lot of times to this song with the children of the compound. Now my melancholy is terrible when i hear her sing. And how lovely she looks! We europeans don't have this kind of music. And this kind of women, unfortunately.

NOT TRUE. No such thing happened. I lived in kenya right through Moi's rule (except the last 2 years), and we listened to all sorts of foreign songs on VOK - the only radio channel through the 80's - all the time. In fact, from around '82 to '88, about 40% of songs played through the day on VOK Swahili service were Franco & TPOK Jazz songs.

And about 'Nakei Nairobi', a special version was made in 1988 for Moi's 10 year anniversary ('twende nairobi tumwimbie baba Moi...") thus the popularity.
