Maelstrom (My life like a Maelstrom) performed by Hell Comes to Frogtown
The band was opening for Billy Club Fest at the Beaux Arts Ball thrown annually at Halloween by the ECU School of Art.
HCTF was the predecessor to the band 'Shadowbox' which became a regional college radio and live performance success in Greenville, Raleigh, Wilmington, Atlantic Beach and Chapel Hill, NC (1990-91)
The event was also sponsored by WZMB radio 88.1 FM which played HCTF's demo songs in regular rotation. Maelstrom was one of the most requested songs.
Maelstom was one of our more popular original songs featured on our demo release recorded at Lovette Studios.
Inspired by the Edgar Allan Poe story "A Descent Into the Maelstrom" this show was performed in front of approximately 250 people.
Lyrics
Me and my maelstrom,
My ship goes down.
you and your shadow
Cannot be found.
I'm burning up the funeral pyre,
You stand and stare as the flames grow higher.
You and your sorrow
you bring me down
move me forward, move me backward
spin me round and down
Preparing for the zero hour
stand atop the burning towers
Chorus 1
I... I fall to the ground.
My eyes stay locked upon the sky
Blackbird, pick the flesh from my bones.
My life like the maelstrom.
Verse 2
Dispatch a warning across the sea yea
Never thought the world could take me crashing down on me.
There beyond the tallest wave
Calling forth from beyond the grave.
Me and my maelstrom
My ship goes down
Move me forward, move me backwards
spin me round and down.
Burning up on the funeral pyre
you stand and stare as the flames grow higher
Chorus 2
I... I fall to the ground.
My eyes stay locked upon the sky!
Hey blackbird, tear the flesh from my bones.
My life like the maelstrom
(Guitar Solo)
Break 1
From hell's heart I spit at thee,
what is dead cannot die.
Your crystal tears cannot repair the damage of your lie
Only love could help to mend this born and battered soul
beaten by the way of the world beyond my control
Oh yes I thought, I thought about it.
I never thought the waves could take me down.
I sailed abroad, I sailed uncharted
I've run aground.
There beyond the tallest wave
Calling forth from beyond the grave.
lost ships, no doubt, they turn and break around you
dead seas live shadows (mumble)
Reaching in the deepest bower
Waiting in the witching hour
I... I fall to the ground.
My eyes stay locked upon the sky.
Hey blackbird, tear the flesh from my bones.
My life like the Maelstrom
REPEAT
funny, with the volume turned down - especially with all those dikes jumping up and down at the front of the stage.
