Forgivable sinner - Sam Winchester reportage through season 1-6

What happened to Sam? How is it possible that when we look into his eyes we don't see the boy we used to know? What was it that made him change, morph into some unidentifiable creature that nobody accepts? Has Sam really lost his soul deep down in the pit? Or was it stolen from him long ago when he was forced into a world of darkness, danger and immense pain? Is it a soul that defines a human being or is the human being merely a soul? But when I look through Sam's eyes through every single year he has passed, I see sins and mysteries, tear and regret, pain and anger all in the same place. Now, however, when I look into Sam's eyes, I see Dean's reflection. As if Dean is a mirror shining with regret.
