What do I mean when I say that Atheism is a religion?

The "go to" response is to say it is, because it is.
Because legally it counts as a religion.
They Athiest organization, atheists PACs, foundations, not-for-profits.

When an inter faith group went to talk to president Obama earlier this year, Atheist were included.

That is the "go to", 500 characters or less, answer to why we consider atheism a religion.

And while it's a good answer, it's not a complete answer.

You have to ask yourself, "why is it that theists consider themselves religious?"

What is it that we do that makes us religious? And there in lies the issue, because whenever you attempt to define religion, you always come up with like a half dozen answers.

But what is it, that we do that makes us religious.?

And I'll go back to a sermon from a minister named Terry, who has since become more involved, higher up in the Anglican church.

  • Not to chose a belief direction is agnostic.

  • @gr8vibes2

    To not know is agnostic...

To actively choose to not believe is atheism...

  • Great video. The only issue I had with what you said was when you mentioned the "non-faith" of Atheism. For me to become an Atheist I would require a lot more faith to believe that God does not exist and I would about the existance of God. There is no rational way to for an Atheist to speak from a position of trying to prove an negative. That is providing no evidence to support their claim.

Atheism has always been defined as a religion, and even more so today with the recent spate of books.

"Out of all the ridiculous religion stories -- which are greatly, wonderfully ridiculous -- the silliest one I've ever heard is, 'Yeah, there's this big, giant universe and it's expanding and it's all going to collapse on itself and we're all just here, just 'cuz. Just 'cuz. That to me, is the most ridiculous explanation ever," - Trey Parker (co creator of South Park)

  • Atheism is as much a religion as 'off' is a TV channel.

  • @DisprovingEvolution Nope, atheism is the inherent skepticism towards the positive claim of a deity existing. It meets none of the criteria of a religion as its specifically *not* believing in the supernatural.

    Wrong

Atheism is "belief" that all of existence came about without intelligence is and simply the result of magical coincendences

Its a belief system that existence can make itself and there is no purpose to life in this 3rd dimension (the fact that this is ONLY the 3rd dimension is obvious to all, except atheists)

Atheism is a faith based doctrine rooted in naturalism and belief (key word) in no God nor gods. It meets ALL CRITERIA of a religion. Religion of naturalism

  • @17R3W Do you think that to believe (or not) is a choice? Atheism, anyway, is a lack of belief not a 'chosen' position. I will now watch the video. Thanks.

  • @17R3W To not know is human.
