RedGear by Alpaxo Software

The following is a demonstration of RedGear, produced by Alpaxo Software. RedGear is a compatibility layer intended to bring a wider variety of applications to the Handheld PC by enabling it to run Pocket PC and Windows Mobile applications quickly and easily. A Hewlett Packard Jornada 720 will be used to illustrate some of the major features provided by this program.

Users who have already tried to run Pocket PC applications may be familiar with an error message, such as this one: "Cannot find Opera or one of its components." However, upon activating RedGear, the applications work properly without any further effort.

One of the most anticipated advantages of RedGear is the ability to run modern web browsers, such as this Opera version 8.65. Programs retain the HPC look and feel, with the menu bar at the top. Right clicks are also performed in the normal way, by using Alt+Tap.

Vertical oriented applications also present a new level of ease with scroll bars. Here we see a card game, originally written for Pocket PC. Scroll bars have been added to the side to allow for easy movement of the window. The window may also overlap the taskbar, the menu bar, or both at the touch of a button. A convenient menu in the upper right corner provides access to common RedGear options.

As we have seen, RedGear provides new life to the Handheld PC platform by enabling the newest software to function properly.
