On 17 April 2002, 58047 creeps into Andover from the west with a short freight for the Ludgershall MoD branch, just as 4472 Flying Scotsman and the VSOE train approach on the down line. Scotsman is slowing for a signal check but the road clears and the driver opens the regulator; at the same time the 58 is waved back onto the branch, wheels squealing in protest at the curves. A few months earlier, on New Years Eve 2001, 4472 heads a special away from Andover at around 21.30 hours. A spectacular steam display scatters the platform audience, and a noisy slip gives me the wobbles too.
