This was my first attempt at a short film for Swinburne Film and Television school, Used FCP, After effects and more filters than you could throw a stick at. Enjoy!

SYNOPSIS

Today is the day when things turned from bad to worse for Jimmy(Ben Camakaris). As a renowned user and abuser, his habit finally spiralled out of control. After seeing what dealers had done to his mother he swore he would never cross the line between using to selling. But having just lost his 6th job, he was left with no other option but to approach one of his mothers drug dealers Shiv(Matt Derrick) to feed his habit. Jimmy secures an amount of drugs on credit. He has to sell them by Monday to reimburse Shiv. After waiting for what seems like an eternity, the call comes in Meet me at the workshop 20 mins.

So begins the maniacal journey through the inner city streets to Shivs Mechanical Repairs. The subterranean underworld lives and breathes within this workshop, Shivs cover. After scoring an ounce of crystal methamphetamine with a street value of $10,000. Jimmy has his work cut out for him. The inner addict rears its ugly head and two days of insanity, depravity and sin are compressed into this 2-minute montage.

  • interesting, nice soundtrack (ratm) and how did you get the eyes to dilate?

  • @KenCat1337

Thanks for watching, the trick is a lot simpler than that... In post production i merely placed a black circle over the pupil, and just animated the circle to get larger very slowly. Good effect i reckon, easy, quick, subtle, yet effective. Part 2 coming soon,,,

  • Yeah, the loss of his 6th job is obvious, it's blatantly stated, I just couldn't really make it out first time round with the audio distortion, and the focus of the road.

I don't understand why you applied effects to the times when he's sober.

He must have an INTENSE relationship with his dealer if he's getting $10k of product on tick, and I don't think that's right for 28g (that's like $100 a hit [web, I don't do hard drugs]).

  • Also, digital lighting effects are a bad idea (only cause an obvious vignetting over the footage).

The opening sequence was pretty awesome.

You probably should have had the focus more on the major plot elements of the film rather than just the trip. His responsibility for his mother dying was unobvious, just as the loss of his 6th job. Also, for what reason does he hate his habit?

You shouldn't point out that the drug was raw sugar. hahaha

It's not bad for 6 months work (it's 6 months, right?).

  • Footstep Foley audio was obvious. Was that tourniquet a balloon?

The smoke effect was really bad. You should have either used a fog machine, a herbal mixture (available in some chemists or tobacco shops), or a cigarette.

    Spinning was pretty good.

Blatantly stating his "habit" isn't how I'd go about it.

The lighting filter can have it's source points moved.

I believe you overuse music and should give more to cinematography.

Do you make these films in groups at Swinny, or are they independant?

  • @KenCat1337 probably used a light or something

  • this is a trip...i feel like iv been on the gear for days just watchn this.
