Raising kids can be the most rewarding experience you'll ever have. It can also be your most frustrating. Children are eager learners, but because their brains are still developing they learn in ways we don't often think about. Seemingly small matters like eye contact or physical movement can be powerful motivators you can use to improve communication and help your children grow. Spend 50 minutes with The "Parenting Doctor" and learn: Why kids have tantrums and what you can do about them; What does it mean when kids start asking "why"; Why when you speak to kids can be as important as what you say; Non-verbal ways to reinforce good (or bad) behavior.

Dr. Ann Corwin has over 25 years experience as a teacher and consultant on parenting and child development, and she holds a Ph.D. in Marriage, Family and Child Therapy. Her work includes parenthood training programs and broadcast programs on parenting, and she has been widely published in both professional journals and the popular press. Her book, "The Child Connection," is currently being published.

  • This is not my experience.

I raised a kid, and when she had a temper tantrum, I treated it as I saw it, an emotional storm. They have a bloodstream full of chemicals and don't know what to do with it.

Hold them close to your chest and keep them there until it subsides. Do not beat or punish them or react with anger. This just raises the hormone level. Remember, a two year old is not a rational creature, but they do respond emotionally.

  • Her basic point is right - do not reward bad behaviour (though she could have said it more clearly....)

  • Last time I checked, they lose control becasue they didn't get what they want.

They have temper tantrums from being able to do tasks, but not having the emotional capabilities to comprehend them, as the brain is still developing. You just want to make kids robots.

  • I love my children no matter what and because of that abundant love they love others no matter what. This is love that the world doesnt know and causes unity not separation.I teach them forgiveness and mercy and they do it when they see me.

  • what a crock of shit... kid's on a tantrum, smack the little bugger... DISCIPLINE is what's needed...

the next drive by should be at this person... sheesh...

  • that lady dont know her ass from her elbow

  • Mmmkay, so how does one pick up their kid in this sitch? By their ears? Just... pick 'em up by the lobes and drag 'em around.

I went to college for Early Childhood Ed., worked in daycare centers for over ten years, and now have my own son... and while this isn't the worst advice, it gets batshit. Sick of this politicalized-crap.

  • Sounds like good advice.

  • One word...WHAAAT?!

Children don't know or have borders or limits. PARENTS INSTRUCT THEIR KIDS ABOUT RIGHT AND WRONG BY IMPOSING CONSEQUENCES. What is this woman trying to do? Help raise a new generation of recidivistic criminals?

  • i think i know whats so cousy on her waist.
