World Refugee Day 2011: Remembering the Maguindanao refugees

I had the privilege of producing stories for UNFPA in 2010. From Dec 2009 to Feb 2010, I made several trips to Maguindanao to develop the stories w/ the refugees, Muslim religous leaders and health workers. Although Cotabato and Maguindanao were still under State of Emergency, we had no choice but to push-thru with the production in March 2010. Despite the fact that for most of the refugees and health workers, it was their first time to act; and the first time for all to a camera, everyone gave their best, always considerate of our time schedule especially because the shoot has to pack-up each day before sundown. On our last day, defying UN security, we stayed until around 6 in the evening. It was very difficult for us to leave them behind but we had no other choice. The driver drove like hell in the light-less highway until we reach Cotabato City.
