The writer of this hymn is Reverend Henry S. Ufford who lived in Maine not far from Rockland and Belfast. He witnessed a real lifesaving event along the seashore in Maine back in the late 1800's. I visited his grave in 1945, at Appleton, Maine. Appelton is very close to Camden, Maine. The late Charles E. Fuller of the Old Fashioned Revival Hour used to have his quartet sing this hymn many times during WWII.
