Payne's Grey were a very talented and unlucky german prog metal band. They released only two albums: a mini cd called infinity in 1991 (re-released in 2000) and kadath decoded in 1995.Kadath decoded is a concept album based off on the dream quest of unknown kadath by hp lovecraft. The album is outstanding and capture the mood and the atmosphere of the lovecraftian's writings very well. The album is perfectly balanced and very original, sometimes it reminds me some early shadow gallery (there is even a flute player here).
This is track 09,reaching kadath. Here are the lyrics:

Misguided mortal you must
Seek your way through these mazes
Where all got lost.
Find release in yourself.
Won't you play to our rules
We shall prove you: dreams don't come true.

Flying in the early dawn
Pulled by powers so abhorrent.
No resistance ! You are drawn
by a mighty raging torrent.

Flying over barren landsode,
Cannot steer your winged horse,
Your intentions fade and slide
Into void against this force.

Flying to the Onyx castle
Where Gods are to be said.
into upper halls they hastle
You. - You, who lost all aid.

You must now alone stand trial:
Was in worth that you once did ?
wait until the facing dial
Tells verdicts beyond men's wit.

Ancient immortals, unworthy Gods.
A home forgotten beyond the stars.

  • One of the most underrated prog albums ever!!

  • just found this band several months ago and here i am listening again

  • Thanks for the upload - this is great. Psychotic Waltz's A Social Grace and Dream Theater's When Dream and Day Unite come to mind.

  • Omg, I saw them with Psychotic Waltz in 1996 I believe... They were absolutely great.

I can`t believe you put this on youtube! Awsome!

    Thanks allot
