A Concise Guide to the Gate

The gate can be used for a number of things including removing unwanted noises, creating cool stuttering effects, and lots more! This tutorial is perfect for beginners looking to learn what the parameters on the gate do, and how to put them into use.

First up we use a Drum Loop from our 'Dirty South Drum Loops' release and play with the parameters, and then start chopping out natural room ambience with a vocal sample from our Rasta Vocal Samples release.

This tutorial should give you a good overview of how to use the gate and exactly what it does - we hope you find it useful!

  • you should probably mention that the "level" the audio must be at to exceed the threshold is measured in decibels. I noticed you didn't say that in a few videos, and it might cause confusion, because people might not know what the level is measured by.

  • so if there's nothing in the track i need to eliminate i don't need to use the gate right?

  • Great tuts. One question tho. Why do you use the plug-ins instead of the ones in the effect rack that comes with ableton itself? Are they not good?

  • This info is really useful!

  • can u do expanders and exciters
