@stallen5 It is essentially a hybrid of the two. Neither 2 (with inlet and exhaust valves) nor 4-cycle ( a true 4 cycle would have an oil sump and separate chamber for oil, not the case with the 4-mix). Although the website may say that... According to my FS-90r manual, which I bought the trimmer this week (video to prove it) says "It operates on the 4 stroke principle". Doesn't say it's a pure 4-stroke. I would rely more on forums rather than the STIHL website
@Jon3800 That is completely incorrect. Just because an engine takes oil:gas mixture does not mean it is a 2-cycle engine. The Stihl "4-mix" engines are definitely 4-cycle engines that use gas/oil mix hence the name "4-mix". The Stihl website says "This revolutionary technology features a patented lubrication design that allows the 4-cycle engine to use standard STIHL 2-cycle (50:1) fuel mix..."
2 cycle = 2 stroke which is a engine that requires a gas/oil mixture to run properly. All you do is add the right amount of gas, then you add the oil. Then all you need is mix it.
4-mix is Stihl's 2-cycle (50:1 mix) engine that has uses valves that are typically used in 4 cycle gas trimmers, so it's a combined 2 and 4 cycle hence 4-mix
what is 2 cycle and 4 mix engine ?? is this FS110 use different oil? Well, actually it says to use 50:1 ratio, how do you mix the gasoline? I am so used to mixing one tiny 2 cycle engine bottle to one gallon of gasoline and that's it....

Nice trimmer, but you're so rough on the cord. You should never rev it that much after sitting that long, you can blow the motor.
