William Byrd (1540 - 1623) was the greatest English composer of his generation, comparable in stature to his most distinguished continental contemporaries. Byrd was well known as a keyboard-player. He wrote a wealth of music for the virginals, Fantasias, Pavans and Galliards, the fashionable paired dances of the time, and song variations.

  • This is charming beautiful innocence. Gould made that piano ring like a crystal clear bell. This kind of music reminds me of christmas when I was very very little. I would listen to my grandmother, mother and dad play in the evenings. They played throughout the year of course but the christmas I was almost 3 stand out in my mind like yesterday. Check out the author presenting A Romance on three Legs here on youtube about Gould's piano.

  • @1Janny1 I've always felt the same about this entire album. Whenever I hear it I have this feeling of happy eight year old years with family, just after decorating the tree. The first thing I would always do once it was all lit up was to stare up into the branches from below, and watch all of the lights shine through the upper limbs. That crystal clear feeling of happiness, one of those things that stay solidly with me from childhood. Forgive me for my memories...

    Cheers, Brad

  • I saw William Byrd perform this live at the Royal Albert Hall in 1562, and even he didn't play it as well as Gould.

  • @lobobreed Wasn't it the Barbican?

  • @amadeus9man Nothing to forgive. Those are special memories when we relate back to a happy childhood event in the present. I neglected to say that there was singing by my parents, grandparents that more than anything added to that magical sound. Probably the combination. They sang some really old english christmas music that is seldom heard today. Wish I knew what it was but i know the sound when i hear it. Sorry I did not see notice you had commented before now.

E poi, chi altro ???
