Donka Koleva - Turci Ot Kalofer Slyazoha

DONKA KOLEVA (vocals) is a vocalist prized for her rich, clear, and melodic voice. Her voice was featured in the 2005 film, Everything is Illuminated. She has been featured on numerous recordings in the United States and in Europe. A graduate of the Folklore School in Shiroka Luka, she worked as a soloist with the wedding band Rozova Dolina, directed the chorus of the Sopot Ensemble. In 1994 Donka started recording with National Radio and Television in Bulgaria where her 1997 recording of 'Javore' was named Song of the Year in the Bulgarian national radio competition.. Since emigrating to the U.S. in 1995, Nikolay Kolev and Donka Koleva have played an active role in fostering Bulgarian music across the country. They teach workshops in their respective fields and perform solo and together.

CLEVELAND CONCERT 13 September 2008

Za njihovu izvornu muziku su baš karakteristični ovakvi ženski glasovi. Sličan način pevanja postoji kod nas u jugo-istočnoj Srbiji, mada su njihovi glasovi mnogo karakterističniji .

I will write in English, since this will be posted. This type of robust, strong voice is found in many areas where the Slavic people live (of course, not only Slavs). Similar singing is found in Ukraine and Belorussia. In Ukrainian the type of voice is called "bili holos" which means "white voice" "beli glas".

I am from Croatia but I love listening to the folk music from all parts of the Balkans. The sound is just so unique and beautiful. Today I spent the whole day in Bulgaria :) Thank you to all the talented musicians who continue their tradition and share it with us.
