i tried to put crash bandicoot on there and it worked until the last step i tried playing and it said copyright protection not valid

I'm using System Software Version 3.95. Do I need to downgrade my psp? And will I be able to play normal psp games when I have custom firmware?

yes, you need to downgrade and you will be able to play normal psp games.

when I turn my psp to that, I get a black screen and it turns off.

mine just goes to a black screen and tehn reboots my psp, what do i do?
