Imagine standing at either a station or a gradient on a Western main line and you happened to see a Great Western Castle Class locomotive, either departing the station or roaring fiercely up a steep bank. It's loud 'bark' exaust beat would impress any admirer nearby, even putting the lions in the nearby zoo to shame! This film captures that very thing.

During mid-July to late August 5029 Nunney Castle hauled the Weymouth Seaside Express workings from Bristol to Weymouth and back, after last years successful trial runs. With the high demand of the Weymouth trips 5029 was undoubtedly the choice of motive power for runs.

Locations in the film:
(Bristol-Weymouth)
Bathford
outside Westbury
Witham Friary
Melbury Bubb
Evershot Bank

(Weymouth-Bristol)
Weymouth Station (the shot was taken with me behind the fence)
Upwey Bank
Wyke Champflower (My favourite shot of the film for obvious reasons)
Berkley
Bath Spa

It is worth noting that in the second half of the film I managed to capture some of the most artistic and outstanding series of summer time shots of 5029 so far. With many thanks to Railway Touring Co, West Coast Railway Co and the 5029 Support Crew who all did an amazing role for these runs, and for letting me clean out Nunney aswell.

All these shots along with some other unseen shots will be included on the upcoming DVD of the Weymouth runs, see www.ovpsteam.co.uk for more future details.

  • For me the last segment at Bath Spa is very atmospheric and just like I remember BR steam days.

  • @MrBristolmidland Aye yes it does give that nostalgic feel to the scene if you remember steam back then

  • Earl of mount Edgecombe, Nunney Castle? Both Locos make a fantastic sound. Great film as always Ryan. Well done yet again.

  • @MrBristolmidland Them two are my favourite mainline locos at present :)

  • That was absolutely fantastic Ry, it has to be your best work to date. Faultless camera work and production throughout, and Nunney was without a doubt the star of the show......Well done....10/10....Bob

  • @robmasterman Thank you Bob its been easily said that the final 5 shots in the film are some of my best summer time shots to date. The crews and support crews all did an excellent job out there and real pleasure to get involved with them

  • I can say from my schoolboy days in 1950s Bath that the last shot brought back so

many memories of late afternoons after school waiting for the expresses - notably

the "Merchant Venturer" - to arrive and depart. This video selection has to be one

of the very best of its kind on YouTube - without doubt! Thanks.

  • Super collection of footage, the last three are spectacular

  • @gwrexile Very well appriciated and welcoming your kind comments. It wasn't easy as such but managed to get there in the end. Your right too the echoing bark of the Castle in Weymouth and Bath really brings good sense of feel to your ears

  • @VHKDK I have to admit that the shot at Wyke Champflower is one of my bestest summer time shots I've done so far, the weather, the clear sky in the background, the cows in the field, the clag, sound, lighting ect everything! I aint fussed over one individual who gives a dislike he can shove himself in the end
