Well In the spirit of being literal I would have to point out that if Kira was a "vegetable" like a carrot, (Carrot-Kira) he would be devoid of any hands or feet. Kinda hard to pilot a gundam with only fibre and vitamin A :)

Seriously though Cagalli has a lot of emotions which usually conflict with her piloting abilities. In a way I've notice that emotions, except for a few cases, tend to imped all the characters performance on the battlefield.

... sorry to by literal but Kira's the Ultimate Coordinator, Cagalli is a natural (not there's anything wrong with that, I just makeing a point)and the Strike is more powerful than Strike Rouge... so Kira KIll her even if he was a vegetable.
