Brian Matusz warms up before the February 22 season opener between the USD Toreros and the San Diego St. Aztecs. The 6-foot-5, 200 pound southpaw was 10-3 with a 2.85 earned run average and recorded 163 strikeouts in 123 innings as a sophomore. The junior is a preseason All-American and is considered as a top 3-to-5 prospect for the 2008 First-Year Player Draft. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the fourth round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of St. Marys High School in Arizona.

@illegalblues83 scap loading isnt neccessarily good. if you take the elbow above the shoulder youll hurt your arm, you have to know how to do it right.

You may be right about his mechanics, but the majors obviously don't seem to see much of a problem with them. And if they do, it is obvious that they believe it will be easy to work out because he is projected to go in the top 5 picks if not 1st in the draft this year.

don't like his mechanics at all. hate the recoil at the end of his delivery, i don't see much of a scap load, terrible lower body usuage

In the stretch, his feet are too far apart. He is not able to load up on the back leg as he should.

Just another upper body thrower who hasn't learned to use the bottom 2/3 of his body. I have 14 year olds with longer strides who move twice as fast. At least he doesn't look like Kyle Drabek.
