This was the song that Marty sang to get a job with a radio station after listening to and thinking he could do a better job than the singer the station already had! Marty jumped on his motorcycle and turned up at the radio station and auditioned after telling them he wanted to sing on the station. "But we already have a singer" Marty was told. "Yeah, but I'm better", replied Marty and after auditioning him the station took him on and got rid of the other guy. I wonder what would have happened if Marty hadn't taken that motorcycle ride that fateful day back in Arizona in the late 40's. With a voice like he had it would only have been a matter of time before he had broken through anyway. Marty sang the song the rest of his career on his many personal appearances.

So Mr. Robbins is saying, The Strawberry Roan is such a mean bucker, that only Mr. Robbins could tame him? And he feels sorry for the next man who tries to tame the caballo - cuz he will die!? Bad Ass! EXCELLENT! Hardcore Cowboy song

@katyejanae I sang this to all of my kids when they were young. They're almost teenagers now and roll their eyes at me when i sing it now.

Strawberry Roan is a true cowboy folk song. Marty Robbins did it the best of anyone, and his album, "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" is an excellent collection of songs about the Wild West, some real folk songs, some written by Marty or others. I'm not a big country music fan, but I am a big Marty Robbins fan. He saved a lot of cowboy folk songs for us to remember.

Other children got lullabys & mother goose. I got Marty Robbins from my grandfather & Stattler Brothers from my grandmother. This song was my favorite bedtime song & I cry every time I hear it becuse my "papa" isn't around to sing it to my kids. Thank you so much for posting this video & bringing back all my happy memories.
