Disgusting Food At CFHS (1997)

"Catalina Foothills High School destroyed all the food in its cafeteria's walk-in refrigerator last month after a health inspector found it wasn't working.

The faulty refrigerator was one of 16 health inspection violations that led to the suspension of the high school's regular food-serving permit, according to Pima County Health Department records. The cafeteria scored 62 out of a possible 100 in the inspection - the lowest score for a school cafeteria in the last few years.

Catalina Foothills, 4300 E. Sunrise Dr, had to throw out 560 half-ppints of milk several cases of meat, more than 6 gallons of salad dressing and other food after an inspector found the refrigerator's temperature to be above the 45 degree cutoff.

Don Gala, the high school's food services director said that non of the food was spoiled or bad, calling the quantity destroyed "very, very little." (Note: 560 half-pints = 35 gallons)

The refrigerator's thermostat broke for the first time Sept. 29 - the day of the inspection, he said.

In addition, the inspector observed a cafeteria employee picking up condiment packets from the floor and returning to the food-serving line without washing her hands, records show.

Other violations included:

- A dumpster leaking decomposing sewage water onto concrete and garbage spilling from an unsecured bag. A bag of garbage was found sitting in greenish-brown water with flies around it.

- Unbagged meat patties spilling onto the shelf and floor.

- Ice scoops stored on soiled surfaces and an ice machine had brown mold on its edge.

- Can openers soiled with encrusted food debris"
