Magma spewed up from underseas volcanic activity 70 million years ago and this molten rock changed to a black color when it cooled. That is why this area of Egypt's desert is called the "Black Desert."

It was easy to recogize where the Black Desert began and ended. Small, big and immense black boulders strewn on the golden sands. A study in contrast and one valley resembled nothing more than a big, outdoor coal mine. Incredibly beautiful...
