He's doing well. Here's a tip for side-passng over an object ....If you place the object under where you are sitting in the saddle, you give the horse room for both front and hind hooves. I do agree about the spurs, because they can cause necrotic damage under the skin. You can learn to teach a horse without using either a bit or spurs in Basic Training for a Safe Trail Horse. For more obstacles to practice watch videos by theonesugarlady (she rides without bit or spurs)

The spurs do not hurt/harm the horse. They are simply there to aid in making the rider's leg aids more clear to the horse.
