Brave double amputee Jessy Hatch gets new running legs

She had the toughest of starts in life, but now nine-year-old Jessy Hatch has a smile that can light up any room.

Double amputee Jessy, from Phoenix, Arizona, was born a methamphetamine addict and her mother was jailed when she was baby.

Thanks to her adoptive parents, Aaron and Dawn, Jessy has taken huge steps in life with her prosthetic legs.

But now she can go a whole lot further, having just received a pair of running legs.

Aaron Hatch Fox 10 News: 'Biological mom did meth while she was pregnant, which altered her genes -- hence, the reason we had to have her legs amputated above the knees.'

He added that Jessy was 11-months-old when doctors amputated both of her legs above the knee.

But despite her traumatic start in life, mother Dawn says Jessy is a remarkably contented child.

Dawn said: 'She's just really outspoken about it. She kind of laughs about it.
'I am just so amazed that she still puts a smile on her face despite it all.'

On getting her running legs, Jessy said: 'Now I have to go to the gym to practice running.'

The Hatchs held a fundraiser on Saturday, where they run their non-profit organization to raise money for the gym membership.

The gym has an annual fee of $750, money much needed to help Jessy grow and enjoy new adventures.

The family's non-profit organization, which helps children like Jessy, is called Give It Twice.
